History of 3 Reels Slots

The history of the three-reel slot machine dates back to the original inventor of the slot machine, Charles Fey. In the late 19th century, Fey devised a machine that featured three spinning reels and five symbols: diamonds, spades, hearts, horseshoes and the Liberty Bell. It was that final symbol that gave the machine the name “Liberty Bell,” which would become a common symbol on slot machines for over 100 years.

For most of the 20th century, three-reel slots were considered the norm. These games ran on revolving mechanical reels, meaning that each stop on each reel had an equal chance of being hit (barring the ability of players to skillfully stop the reels when the most valuable symbols would appear on the payline, which was possible in some games). The biggest problem with these machines was that there was a limit to how unlikely any particular combination of symbols could be. Early machines often used 10 symbols per reel; even if only one stop had the “jackpot” symbol on it on each reel, the player would still have a 1 in 1,000 chance of winning the jackpot each time they played, limiting the size of the jackpots operators could afford to reward players.

A major breakthrough cam in the 1980s, when the first electronic slot machines were introduced. These games allowed manufacturers and operators to weight each symbol, making some more likely to appear than others. In this way, while the physical reel might only have 20 symbols on it, the “virtual” electronic reel that the machine picked results from might have 256 stops on it, with more of these stops triggering low value symbols or blanks, and few (or only one) triggering a jackpot symbol. More recently, video slot machines have become much more popular with both operators and players. These games have no mechanical parts; instead, the entire game takes place in a graphical interface, with a random number generator determining the results behind the scenes.
